Belgium is close, but its paperwork is local. Customs relief is national, the parking for moving day is run commune by commune, and you register within days of arriving. Here is what to sort, and in what order.

Do you pay customs moving to Belgium after Brexit?

Not on qualifying household goods — but the relief is not automatic. You apply for a tax and duty exemption, and it is granted when you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months and have owned and used the goods for at least six.

The goods have to arrive within 12 months of you becoming resident in Belgium. Alcohol, tobacco, company vehicles and equipment you use for work are excluded, and new purchases don't qualify. Your removal company normally prepares the declaration with your inventory.

Who sorts the parking for moving day?

The commune, not a national body — and in the City of Brussels it takes two requests. First the Brussels Region authorises the temporary use of the road, through its Osiris system. Then the city rents out and places the no-parking signs.

Ask no later than 10 working days before the move. Brussels is 19 communes, and the others — like the rest of Belgium — run their own reservation schemes, so check the rules where you are moving to. Without signs, a lorry can end up double-parked or carrying from round the corner.

How do removals to Belgium travel?

By road. Lorries cross on the Dover ferries to Calais or Dunkirk, or through the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone, and Belgium starts a short drive past the French ports. A part load shares the lorry with other moves and costs less, with a delivery window; a dedicated vehicle runs on your dates.

We don't publish a Belgium price — no figure we could verify holds across home sizes. A survey of your volume gives a fixed one. Our European removals guide compares the wider continent.

What do you need to do when you arrive?

Register at your commune within eight days of arriving. The police usually call at the address to confirm you live there before registration is completed. Residence rights are outside our area — check official Belgian guidance for your situation.

Leave meat and dairy behind: EU rules have banned them from Great Britain in personal goods since January 2021. Keep the customs paperwork with the removal inventory, and if the new home isn't ready, storage in the UK can hold your things until it is.

Moving from Belgium back to the UK

The return leg has its own relief. Transfer of Residence relief lets you bring household goods into the UK without duty or VAT if you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months and owned and used the goods for at least six.

Apply on GOV.UK before the goods arrive. HMRC gives you a reference number, and your removal company quotes it to clear the goods at the border.

Removals to Belgium: FAQs

Do I pay customs duty on household goods moving to Belgium after Brexit?

Not if you qualify for relief: you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months in a row, and owned and used the goods for at least six. You must apply for the exemption, and bring the goods in within 12 months of becoming resident.

What is not covered by the customs relief?

Alcohol, tobacco and tobacco products, company vehicles and equipment you use for work. Everything else in a normal household move is covered, provided it is used, yours, and staying with you.

Do I need a parking permit for the removal lorry in Brussels?

In the City of Brussels, yes — in two steps. The Brussels Region authorises the use of the road through its Osiris system, then the city rents and places the no-parking signs. Ask at least 10 working days before. Other communes run their own schemes, so check yours.

How soon must I register after moving to Belgium?

Within eight days of arriving, at the commune where you live. The police usually visit to confirm the address. Residence rights themselves are outside our area — check official Belgian guidance for your situation.

Can I take British food to Belgium?

Not meat or dairy. EU rules have banned meat, milk and products made from them — ham, cheese, cream cakes — from Great Britain in personal goods since January 2021. Empty the fridge and freezer before packing day.

I am moving back from Belgium to the UK. Do I pay duty?

Usually not. Transfer of Residence relief covers goods you have owned and used for six months if you have lived outside the UK for 12. Apply on GOV.UK before the goods arrive and give the reference to your removal company.
