Since Brexit, a move to Bulgaria clears customs on the way in — yet used household goods still enter duty free if you can show 12 months living abroad. Here is what Bulgarian customs accepts as proof, what to register when you arrive, and how the move travels.

Is a move to Bulgaria duty free after Brexit?

For ordinary household goods, yes — if you qualify. Bulgarian customs releases personal property free of duty for people moving their normal home from outside the EU. You need to have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months without a break, and to have owned and used the goods for at least six months before you left.

The move can arrive in more than one load within 12 months of settling, but only if the later consignments were declared at the first clearance — so put everything on the inventory from day one. Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles never qualify.

How do you prove 12 months living outside the EU?

Bulgarian customs is unusually specific here. It accepts a passport, an employment contract covering the period, or a certificate from the police or local authority in the country you left confirming your departure. For a UK move, a work contract plus a year of tenancy or council tax records is the usual bundle.

Trips back don’t reset the clock: leave and holidays are not treated as breaking the 12 consecutive months. And if a marriage abroad ends and you come home sooner than planned, showing you clearly intended to stay at least a year can be enough.

Once the goods are released duty free, don’t sell, lend or hire them out for 12 months without telling customs, or the duty falls due.

Moving home to Bulgaria after living in the UK

Plenty of moves on this route are Bulgarians heading home. The customs relief works the same for you as for anyone; the extra step is your address. Bulgaria’s Civil Registration Act requires a change of current address to be declared within 30 days, at the municipality or district office for your new home.

Do it early. The address you register is the one banks, doctors and schools will ask for, and a removal company’s delivery paperwork is easier to match when it agrees.

Buying a home in Bulgaria as a Briton: what about the move?

The other big group here is British buyers — village houses inland, flats on the Black Sea coast. Rural addresses can be hard for a large lorry to reach, so tell the removal firm about unmade roads, steep lanes or a narrow village centre before they quote. They may switch to a smaller vehicle for the last stretch.

Residence rules for UK nationals are a separate matter from the move. The Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior handles them — mvr.bg is the place to check before you book dates.

Which way does a removal to Bulgaria travel?

By road, right across the continent. From the Channel crossing the lorry heads through Germany, Austria and Hungary and on via Romania to Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna or Burgas. It is a long run, which is why most smaller moves go as a part load, sharing the lorry and the cost in return for a delivery window.

Leave British meat and dairy behind — since 2021 it can’t enter the EU in personal belongings. And because we couldn’t find a reliable published figure, we don’t quote a Bulgaria price: a survey gives you a fixed one. The European removals guide compares other routes.

Moving from Bulgaria to the UK

The UK side has its own relief, Transfer of Residence, claimed on form ToR01 — before you move, not once the goods are at the border. You need 12 consecutive months living outside the UK, goods owned for at least six months, and to import them within 12 months of arriving.

Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles are excluded. If keys to the UK home come later than the lorry, storage holds everything in between.

Removals to Bulgaria: FAQs

Will I pay import duty on furniture moved to Bulgaria?

Not on qualifying personal property. Bulgarian customs releases it free of duty if you have lived outside the EU for 12 months in a row and owned the goods for at least six months before moving.

Do holidays back in Bulgaria break the 12 months abroad?

No. Bulgarian customs says leave and holidays don’t interrupt the 12 consecutive months, so visits home during your time in the UK don’t count against you.

Can the move come in more than one load?

Yes, provided every consignment arrives within 12 months of settling and the later loads were declared at the first customs clearance. List everything on the inventory from the start.

I am Bulgarian and moving back. What do I register?

Your current address. The Civil Registration Act gives 30 days to declare a change of address, at the municipality or district office where you now live.

Can I bring British food with me?

Not meat or dairy. Since January 2021 products of animal origin from Great Britain cannot enter the EU in personal belongings. Clear the fridge and freezer first.
