An island move means a sea crossing, a container and a customs check at Limassol. The good news: used household goods still go in free of duty and VAT if you meet two simple rules. Here's how removals to Cyprus work, and what to sort before the container is sealed.

Do you pay customs or VAT on removals to Cyprus?
Not on qualifying household goods. Since Brexit the UK counts as outside the EU, so a move to Cyprus is an import. Relief from duty and VAT applies when your normal home has been outside the EU for at least 12 months, and you've owned and used the goods there for the last six.
Timing matters too. The goods must be cleared within six months before or 12 months after you make Cyprus your home. New items still in their boxes don't count — pack the kitchen you actually cook in, not the one you just bought.

How does shipping furniture to Cyprus work?
By sea. Unlike a move to France or Spain, there's no road all the way, so your belongings are packed, loaded into a container in the UK and shipped to Limassol — the island's principal port and home to its container terminal. Customs clear the goods there before the last leg to your door.
You choose between two ways of filling the box. A sole-use container suits a whole house and keeps your dates fixed. A shared groupage load costs less for a smaller move, but sails when the container is full, so build slack into your plans.
Published prices disagree too widely to be useful, so we won't quote one. Volume sets the bill: a survey gives a fixed figure for your actual inventory. Professional export packing is worth it here — a container crossing the Mediterranean in August gets hot, and cargo shifts at sea.

Moving to Cyprus from the UK: what else to sort
Residence rules changed for UK nationals after Brexit, and they're not ours to advise on. Start with GOV.UK's Living in Cyprus guide and the Cypriot Civil Registry and Migration Department.
Know which side of the island you're heading for. The Republic of Cyprus doesn't recognise the administration in the north, so a move to Kyrenia is a different job from a move to Paphos — different routes, different paperwork. Say which it is when you ask for quotes.
One small mercy: Cyprus drives on the left, like the UK. If the new place isn't ready when the container sails, storage in the UK can hold your things until it is.
Can you take pets to Cyprus?
Yes. Dogs and cats need a microchip, a rabies vaccination, and an animal health certificate from your vet. Wait at least 21 full days after the first rabies jab before travelling, and use the certificate within 10 days of it being issued.
Cyprus adds one step: tell the district veterinary office at your point of entry — for most people, Larnaca airport — 48 hours before you arrive. Pets travel separately from the container, so book their flight on its own timetable.

Cyprus to UK removals: moving back
Coming home works the same way in reverse — by sea from Limassol. To bring your belongings in free of UK duty and VAT, claim Transfer of Residence relief on a ToR1 form before they arrive.
You'll need to have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months and owned the goods for at least six. Once relief is granted, you can't sell, lend or hire them out for 12 months. Dogs coming back also need tapeworm treatment one to five days before arrival.

Removals to Cyprus: FAQs
Do I pay duty or VAT shipping my furniture to Cyprus?
Usually not. Cyprus gives relief from import duty and VAT on personal belongings when you move your normal home there from outside the EU — as the UK now is. You need to have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months and owned and used the goods for the last six.
How do removals get from the UK to Cyprus?
By sea, almost always. Your belongings travel in a container — your own, or shared with other households on a groupage service — and land at Limassol, the island’s main port. Customs clearance happens there before delivery to your door.
Should I ship a full container or share one?
It depends on volume. A whole house usually justifies its own container and fixed dates. A smaller move shares space on a groupage service, which costs less but waits for the container to fill before it sails.
Can I take my dog or cat to Cyprus?
Yes, with a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an animal health certificate from your vet. Cyprus also asks you to tell the district veterinary office at your point of entry 48 hours before you arrive.
Can removal companies move me to Northern Cyprus?
Some can, but treat it as a different move. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise the administration in the north, so routes, paperwork and customs differ from a move into the Republic. Say which side of the island you are moving to when you ask for quotes.
How do I bring my things back from Cyprus to the UK?
Claim Transfer of Residence relief on a ToR1 form before the goods arrive. You need to have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months and owned the goods for at least six, and you can’t sell or lend them for 12 months.
