Every removal from Britain to Finland finishes with a Baltic sea crossing. Household goods still go in free of VAT and duty if they qualify. Here is what Finnish Customs asks for, how the lorry reaches Helsinki, and what to do once you are there.

Do you pay VAT or duty moving to Finland after Brexit?

Not on qualifying removal goods. Finnish Customs — Tulli — lets them in free of both when your normal home has been outside the EU for at least 12 months in a row. You prove that with documents: a certificate of employment is the example Tulli gives, and a tenancy or council tax record backs it up.

The goods themselves must have been yours, and in your household’s use, for at least six months before the move. Declare them within 12 months of moving. Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles are outside the relief, and for a year after clearance the goods can’t be lent, pledged, hired out or handed on without telling Customs first.

Can your goods reach Finland before you do?

Yes — useful when a job starts before the house sale completes, or when a part load lands on its own schedule. Tulli will still clear the goods free of VAT and duty, on two conditions.

  • You undertake to move your normal residence to Finland within six months of clearance.
  • You lodge a guarantee with Customs, which is released once the move is made.

If the six months pass without the move, the guarantee covers the tax that would have been due. Leave the goods in storage on the UK side instead if your start date is still uncertain.

Which ferries does a removal to Finland use?

The lorry crosses the Channel and drives through Germany to the Baltic coast. From there it is a choice of sea routes. Finnlines’ Travemünde–Helsinki service is the only direct ferry between continental Europe and Finland. The alternative runs on through Denmark and Sweden and crosses from Kapellskär to Naantali, near Turku — Finland’s busiest freight link with Sweden.

Which one your remover uses depends on sailings, the load and where in Finland you are heading; Turku and the south-west suit the Swedish crossing, Helsinki and the east the direct boat. We don’t quote crossing or delivery times — they shift with the schedule, so ask for them in the quote.

One thing never makes the ferry: meat and dairy from Great Britain, barred from EU personal belongings since January 2021. We don’t publish a price for Finland either, as no source we could check gives one. Our European removals guide compares the wider continent.

Who do you tell when you move into a Finnish home?

The Digital and Population Data Services Agency, known as DVV. A notification of move is due within one week of moving to your new address, and it is what gets you onto the population register at that address.

British citizens also need a residence permit to live in Finland since Brexit. We cover the move itself; for permits, the Finnish Immigration Service, migri.fi, is the place to start.

Moving from Finland to the UK

The way home uses HMRC’s Transfer of Residence relief. Apply on form ToR01 before the goods set off — it isn’t granted after they arrive. You need to have lived outside the UK for 12 consecutive months, owned the goods for six, and import them within 12 months.

Tell DVV you are leaving, too: a notification of moving abroad keeps the Finnish register straight and gives you a dated record of the move.

The Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV). A notification of move is due within a week of moving to your new address.
