How much do removals to New Zealand cost?
For a 20ft container, the two main published price lists land close together — but they include different things, so read the second column before comparing.
| Published by | What it covers | 20ft, from | 40ft, from |
|---|---|---|---|
| ShipIt (2026) | Freight; collection, packing and destination charges extra | £4,825 | £8,200 |
| PSS Removals (2026) | Door to door with packing and basic clearance | £4,890 | £7,650 |
Duties, taxes and quarantine fees are extra on both. A survey turns your load into a fixed door-to-door price.
Who gets household goods into New Zealand duty-free?
The household effects concession covers people moving to New Zealand for the first time, and New Zealanders returning after at least 21 months away. You need a qualifying passport or visa — a work visa of 12 months or more can count, a student visa can't.
The goods must be owned and used by you before you leave, for your own use. New or unused items, vehicles and commercial goods sit outside it, and each consignment pays a Goods Levy. You declare everything on form NZCS 218 with your passport copy, packing list, shipping documents and MPI declaration.

What does New Zealand biosecurity expect?
Everything must arrive clean, dry and free of soil and pests. Declare food of any kind, plants, wooden items, soil, water, animal products and outdoor equipment — boots, tents, bikes, golf clubs, fishing and camping gear.
- Wash boots, tyres and garden tools until no soil is left.
- Leave plants, seeds and food behind.
- Make sure any wooden crates meet MPI's packaging rules.
Undeclared risk goods can mean an instant NZ$400 fine. A tidy shed in the UK is the cheapest insurance you'll buy.

How long does it take, and which ports?
A full container takes roughly 6–8 weeks to reach port; shared containers take longer. Household goods arrive through Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Lyttelton for Christchurch, Napier and Port Otago for Dunedin.
Send the bulky things by sea and keep a few weeks of essentials with you. Our international removals page covers choosing a mover, and export packing protects what travels.

How long does shipping to New Zealand take?
A full container takes roughly 6–8 weeks to reach a New Zealand port, and a shared container longer. Delivery to your door adds more time, so plan a few weeks of essentials in your luggage.
Do I pay duty on household goods in New Zealand?
Not if you qualify for the household effects concession: moving to New Zealand for the first time, or returning after at least 21 months away, with a qualifying passport or visa. The goods must be owned and used by you before you leave. New items and vehicles are excluded.
What is form NZCS 218?
The declaration New Zealand Customs uses for unaccompanied personal effects. You lodge it with a copy of your passport, the packing list, shipping documents and the MPI biosecurity declaration.
What will New Zealand biosecurity check?
Food, plants, wooden items, soil, outdoor gear and animal products must be declared, and everything must be clean and dry. Undeclared risk goods can bring an instant NZ$400 fine.
Does a student visa count for the concession?
No. A work visa of 12 months or more can qualify; a student visa does not. Check your visa against New Zealand Customs guidance before you ship.
