What Cardiff books
What do removal companies in Cardiff handle?
House removals in Cardiff, from terraces to Pontcanna villas
Most of the work is the terraced grid — Roath, Canton, Grangetown, Splott. The larger Victorian and Edwardian houses in Pontcanna and Llandaff fill a bigger vehicle and take a longer day. House removals here are best priced after a survey, and the surveyor should look at the street as well as the rooms.
Flat moves in Cardiff Bay
Many Bay apartment blocks have a service lift to book, a shared loading bay and set hours for moving in. Good flat removals crews ask for those details up front. Get the building's move-in form before you fix a date, not after.
Home removals from Cardiff to England
Plenty of Cardiff moves head east on the M4 — to Bristol, Bath, Reading or London. There is no toll on either Severn bridge now, so the price is time, fuel and crew. For long distance removals, ask whether the quote is a fixed price and whether a second day is included if the load and unload won't fit into one.
Removals and storage in Cardiff
Buying a Plasdŵr new-build, or waiting on a chain in Whitchurch? Some companies can hold your goods in storage while the gap closes. Ask for the weekly rate in writing, and whether the second delivery out of store is priced as a separate move.
Furniture and piano removals
A Roath bay-fronted terrace can have a narrow hall and a tight turn on the stairs. List any wardrobe, sofa or dresser that came in in pieces. An upright or grand piano needs its own line on the inventory, with the floor it sits on.
Man and van and clearances
A bedsit in Cathays or one piece of furniture rarely needs a full crew. Our man and van Cardiff page covers hourly rates for those. For probate or a rental turnaround, house clearance companies quote through the form too — check for a waste carrier registration.

The local reality
Why does parking decide the price of a Cardiff move?
Look down a street in Roath or Cathays and you will see the problem. The houses open straight onto the pavement, there are no driveways, and both kerbs are lined with cars by evening. A 7.5-tonne lorry has nowhere to stop.
The answer is reserved space outside the door. Ask Cardiff Council about a parking bay suspension early, then tell the removal company it is booked. If there is no space, they will plan a smaller vehicle and more trips, and the quote will show it.
Plasdŵr is the opposite problem. This planned garden city in north-west Cardiff is set to reach around 7,000 homes, and new-build completions land on dates the developer controls. Keep your removal booking flexible by a day or two until the completion date is confirmed in writing.
Removals in Roath, Canton, Whitchurch and around Cardiff
- Roath, Cathays, Splott and Adamsdown (CF24) — the densest terraces, with Roath Park and Penylan into CF23.
- Canton, Pontcanna and Riverside (CF5, CF11) — west of the Taff, bigger houses toward Llandaff Fields.
- Cardiff Bay and Butetown (CF10) — mostly apartments, so lifts and loading bays matter.
- Llandaff, Fairwater and Ely (CF5) — semis and estates where a van often reaches the kerb.
- Whitchurch, Llanishen, Rhiwbina and Heath (CF14) — the northern suburbs, many with drives.
- Cyncoed, Pentwyn and Pontprennau (CF23) — north-east, larger plots and newer estates.
- Rumney, Llanrumney and St Mellons (CF3) — the eastern edge, toward Newport.
All of these are Cardiff Council for parking. Outside the city, Penarth (CF64) and Barry (CF62) are Vale of Glamorgan Council, Caerphilly (CF83) is Caerphilly County Borough Council and Pontypridd (CF37) is Rhondda Cynon Taf. Each sets its own parking rules, so check with the council for the address you are moving to.

Moving in Cardiff: what should you know?
Crossing into England costs nothing now. Both Severn bridges went toll-free on 17 December 2018, so a Cardiff to Bristol move is priced on time and fuel alone. That used to be £11.20 each way for a van.
Wales has rules of its own. Since September 2023 most residential streets default to 20mph, which adds a few minutes to cross-city drives on an hourly rate. And if you are buying, you pay Land Transaction Tax rather than Stamp Duty.
Does Cardiff have a clean air zone?
Not a charging one. The council picked non-charging measures to cut pollution, and the Welsh Government accepted the plan in January 2020. A removal van pays nothing extra to drive into the city centre.

Moving to Caerphilly, Pontypridd or the Valleys
Some Valleys terraces climb steep hillsides, and the van may have to stop below your door. That is carrying time, not mileage. Say so when you ask for a quote, and the price will be right first time. For a quick range first, try our removal costs calculator.

Pricing a move in Cardiff
There is no separate price list for Cardiff. What you pay tracks how much you are moving, how far it goes and how hard it is to load. To see the usual numbers by property size, try the removal costs guide, and the cost calculator works out a figure from your own property size and distance.

Moving in Cardiff: FAQs
Do removal companies in Cardiff cover Penarth, Barry and the Valleys?
Yes — the CF area runs well past the city boundary. Penarth is CF64, Barry CF62, Caerphilly CF83 and Pontypridd CF37. Type in the full postcode at each end and you will hear from companies that already work that run.
Do I need a parking suspension for a Cardiff terrace?
On a street where both kerbs fill up by evening, it helps. Ask Cardiff Council about suspending the bays outside your door well before moving day. We could not confirm the current fee or notice period, so check them with the council directly.
Is there a clean air zone charge for a removal van in Cardiff?
No charging zone has been set up. Cardiff Council chose non-charging measures instead, and the Welsh Government accepted that plan in January 2020, judging it likely to meet the legal limit for nitrogen dioxide.
Is there a toll to move from Cardiff into England?
No. Both Severn crossings have been toll-free since 17 December 2018 — a van used to pay £11.20 each way. A Cardiff to Bristol or London move is now priced on time and fuel alone.
Do I pay Stamp Duty if I buy a house in Cardiff?
No — Wales has its own tax. Land Transaction Tax replaced Stamp Duty on 1 April 2018 and is collected by the Welsh Revenue Authority, with its own rates and bands. Your solicitor handles it, but budget for it alongside the removal.
How much do removal companies in Cardiff charge?
It depends on volume, distance and access far more than the postcode. A Cathays terrace with no parking and a Lisvane detached house with a drive price very differently. Send the same inventory to every company so the quotes compare like for like.
