What Hereford books

What do removal companies in Hereford cover?

House removals across the city

Whitecross is Hereford's biggest run of brick housing from around 1900, with long streets and on-street parking. Newer estates ring the edge of the city. All of it is standard house removals work, priced on volume, access and distance.

Flats in the old centre

Flats above shops and in converted Victorian houses sit in the streets around the cathedral. Stairs, narrow passages and parking restrictions set the cost here. For flat removals in the centre, give the floor and say whether there's a lift.

Man with a van in Hereford

A wardrobe from Tupsley to Belmont, or a bedsit near the cathedral? A man and van booking is normally charged by the hour. It suits a small load with short carries. A full cottage out on the lanes is usually better quoted as a removal.

Removals and storage in Hereford

Sold before you've bought? Ask for removals and storage on one quote, with the weeks in store and the second delivery shown as their own lines.

House clearance in Hereford

Clearing a parent's bungalow in Hereford or a farmhouse outbuilding near Leominster? A house clearance company quotes on what's left after the family has taken what it wants. Before anything goes, check the firm is on the Environment Agency's register of waste carriers.

Long-distance moves out of HR

The M50 leaves the A40 near Ross-on-Wye and runs 21.6 miles to junction 8 of the M5. For long-distance removals, give both addresses so each company can plan the route out of the county.

Parking the van

Do you need a parking permit for a removal van in Hereford?

Much of central Hereford is yellow lines, pay and display or residents' permit bays. Herefordshire Council issues a parking dispensation permit, which tells its enforcement officers the vehicle may park on the restriction.

  • It costs £15 for one day and £10 for each extra day, up to 14 days, as of November 2026.
  • It covers single and double yellow lines, loading bays, limited waiting bays, residents' permit bays, pedestrian zones and controlled parking zones.
  • It isn't issued for disabled bays, bus stops, taxi ranks, crossings or streets with a loading ban, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • You must show a genuine need to park there and no realistic alternative. The council also checks road works and other dispensations nearby.
  • The council's page gives no notice period, so apply online as soon as you have a date.

Local knowledge

What should you know before moving in Hereford?

Hereford is a cathedral city of about 62,000 people with one main river crossing. The A49 takes local and through traffic over the Wye on Greyfriars Bridge. In 2017 the city was named Britain's second slowest, at an average of 14 mph.

The river also floods. The Wye reached a record 6.11 metres in February 2020, and the Greyfriars area is where the water comes first. If either address is riverside and your date falls in winter, ask the company what happens if the road closes.

The centre is a conservation area of about 130 hectares with 283 listed buildings. Its streets still follow the medieval plan, down to narrow passages like Capuchin Lane. If you're inside it, say so on the form so each company can choose the right van.

Removals in Hereford, Leominster, Ross-on-Wye and the HR area

  • Hereford east (HR1) — Tupsley, Hampton, Aylestone Hill and Holmer.
  • Hereford south (HR2) — Belmont, Hunderton and Red Hill south of the Wye, out to the Golden Valley. HR2 crosses into Powys.
  • Hereford west (HR4) — Whitecross, Kings Acre, Bobblestock and Credenhill, out to Weobley.
  • Leominster (HR6), Bromyard (HR7) and Ledbury (HR8) — the market towns north and east.
  • Ross-on-Wye (HR9) — south-east, by the start of the M50.
  • Hay-on-Wye (HR3) and Kington (HR5) — the border, partly in Powys.

Herefordshire Council covers the English side; Powys County Council covers the Welsh side. North-west of the city, the Black and White Village Trail runs 40 miles of lanes through Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland. Timber-framed cottages there can mean low doors and single-track access, so mention it.

If you're heading east, the Worcester and Gloucester pages cover the other end of the move. For a price range first, try our removal costs calculator.

Moving in Hereford: FAQs

How do I get permission to park a removal van in central Hereford?

Apply to Herefordshire Council for a parking dispensation permit. It costs £15 for the first day and £10 for each extra day, up to 14 days, as of Nov 2026. You must show a genuine need and no realistic alternative. It covers yellow lines, loading bays, permit bays, limited waiting bays and pedestrian zones.

Where will a Herefordshire dispensation not let the van park?

Disabled bays, bus stops, taxi ranks, pedestrian crossings and streets with a loading ban, except in exceptional circumstances. If your address is on one of those, tell the removal companies so they can plan a longer carry.

Why does crossing the river matter for a Hereford move?

There's one main road over the Wye: the A49 on Greyfriars Bridge, shared by local and through traffic. A move between south of the river and Whitecross or the centre uses it, so agree a start time with the company.

Do removal companies covering Hereford go into Wales?

Yes. HR2, HR3 and HR5 reach into Powys, so Hay-on-Wye and the border villages are inside the HR area. Give both full postcodes and the quote covers the whole journey.

Is there a clean air zone in Hereford?

No. Hereford is not on the government list of clean air zones, so a van driving into the city pays no daily emissions fee.

How much do removals cost in Hereford?

It depends on how much you own, the carry at each end and the miles between. Two three-bed homes can price far apart if one is a Whitecross terrace with kerbside parking and the other a cottage up a lane near Pembridge. The removal costs guide has UK ranges.
