Removal companies in Stevenage

Moving in Stevenage? Britain's first new town was planned so you could walk to the shops without crossing a road, and plenty of front doors still face a footpath or a green rather than a kerb. Compare removal companies covering Stevenage and get quotes that price the carry, not just the mileage.

What Stevenage books

What do removal companies in Stevenage cover?

House removals in Stevenage

From Bedwell and Shephall to Chells, Pin Green and Great Ashby on the north-east edge, house removals here are surveyed and fixed-price. The survey should note where the van can stop, not just how much you own.

Man with a van in Stevenage

Taking a single wardrobe from Symonds Green to the Old Town, or clearing a box room before a sale? An hourly man and van booking is usually cheaper than a full crew. Book two people if the van will wait in a garage court and the walk to your door is long.

Flats in and around the town centre

The blocks near the station and the pedestrian precinct mean lifts, stairs and loading times. A flat removal here is priced on floors and access as much as on size. Ask the building about lift bookings early.

Moving to Stevenage from London

King's Cross is about 24 minutes by train, and the A1(M) passes the town's west side at junctions 7 and 8. If the van loads inside London and doesn't meet the ULEZ standard, the firm pays £12.50 for that day. Ask whether it's in the price. For moves further afield, see long distance removals.

Storage when the new build isn't ready

Buying on one of the sites north or west of the town? The developer sets the handover, and it can slip. Short-term removals storage holds your furniture in the meantime. Ask each company whether it offers storage and how it charges — by the week, by the container or by the space used.

The new-town layout

Why does the van park round the back in Stevenage?

Stevenage was designated on 1 August 1946, and its planners set out to separate cars, bikes and people. The town got miles of segregated cycleways. Some neighbourhoods were built to the Radburn plan.

In a Radburn street, cars reach the houses by service roads behind. The fronts face gardens, footpaths and shared greens. A 3.5-tonne Luton has to stop at the service road or a garage court, and the crew walks everything from there.

The town's own museum says parking spaces and garages have always been in short supply. So measure the walk from the nearest place a van can stand to your door. If it's more than a few dozen metres, say so. It may need an extra pair of hands, and that's far cheaper to price in than to discover on the day.

Local knowledge

Moving in Stevenage: what should you know?

How do you suspend a parking bay for a removal van in Stevenage?

Email Stevenage Borough Council at tro@stevenage.gov.uk not less than a fortnight before the suspension starts, with the dates, times, purpose and a plan of the bays. Moving house is one of the reasons the council lists. As of Nov 2026 the charges are:

  • £125 application fee, paid upfront.
  • £22 per bay per day in the first week (or per 5 metres of kerb), rising to £24 from week two.
  • £55 per bay per day if you overstay the booked dates.

You put up advance warning signs at each end of the bays at least a week before, then set out no-waiting cones, usually before 5.30am. The council keeps a small supply of cones for residents. Pay and display bays carry an extra charge for lost parking income.

Is there a clean air zone in Stevenage?

No. Stevenage isn't on the GOV.UK list of clean air zones, so a removal van pays nothing to drive into the town.

Removals in the Old Town, Great Ashby and around Stevenage

  • Old Town (SG1) — the older High Street, with its coaching inns, west of the new-town centre.
  • Bedwell, Symonds Green, St Nicholas and Martins Wood (SG1) — the centre, west and north of the new town.
  • Pin Green (SG1) — the north-east.
  • Great Ashby (SG1) — on the north-east edge, but run by North Hertfordshire Council.
  • Shephall, Chells, Broadwater and Poplars (SG2) — the south and east.
  • Knebworth (SG3) and Walkern (SG2) — villages just outside the borough.

Most of SG1 and SG2 is Stevenage Borough Council, so the suspension rules above apply. Great Ashby and Knebworth are North Hertfordshire; Walkern is East Hertfordshire. Beyond the town, SG takes in Hitchin (SG4, SG5), Letchworth (SG6), Baldock (SG7), Royston (SG8), Ware (SG12), Hertford (SG13, SG14), and Biggleswade (SG18) and Sandy (SG19) in Bedfordshire.

The town is still growing. The Local Plan, adopted in May 2019, provides for 7,600 new homes. For a quick price range, try our removal costs calculator.

What it costs

How much a Stevenage move costs

Nobody prices a move by city. The variables that matter are volume, the distance between addresses, and access at both ends. Published ranges by property size live in the removal costs guide, and the cost calculator estimates your own move without waiting for a callback.

Good to know

Moving in Stevenage: FAQs

Why can’t the van park outside my house in Stevenage?

Because in parts of the town it was designed that way. Some neighbourhoods follow the Radburn plan, with cars on service roads behind the houses and footpaths and greens at the front. The van stops at the service road or garage court, and the crew carries from there.

How do I suspend a parking bay for a house move in Stevenage?

Email Stevenage Borough Council at tro@stevenage.gov.uk at least a fortnight ahead. Moving house is a listed reason. It costs £125 to apply plus £22 per bay per day in the first week, as of Nov 2026. You put up the warning signs a week before and set out the cones yourself.

Do removal companies in Stevenage cover the rest of Hertfordshire?

The ones on Removly cover the whole SG area, from Hertford and Ware in the south to Biggleswade and Sandy in Bedfordshire, with Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and Royston between. Give both postcodes and the quote covers the full run.

Is there a clean air zone charge for vans in Stevenage?

No. Stevenage is not on the GOV.UK list of clean air zones. If the van collects in London first, a non-compliant van pays the ULEZ charge of £12.50 a day there, so ask which vehicle is coming.

Who do I ask about parking in Great Ashby?

Great Ashby postcodes are SG1, but the estate sits in North Hertfordshire, not Stevenage borough. Check with North Hertfordshire Council before you assume the Stevenage suspension rules apply.

How much do removals cost in Stevenage?

Volume, access and distance set the price. Here, access mostly means the carry from the nearest place a van can stop. Tell the firm how far that is and the quote will hold on the day. The removal costs guide has UK ranges.
