What Wigan books
What do removal companies in Wigan cover?
House removals in Wigan
Red-brick terraces round Mesnes Park and Swinley, semis in Standish and Orrell, newer estates on the edges of Hindley and Ashton. House removals are priced on what you own and how easy it is to reach. If your street sits in a Swinley permit zone, say so on the form.
Man with a van in Wigan
Taking a sofa from Pemberton to a new flat in Leigh, or a few boxes back from university? A man and van charges by the hour, so the distance between your two WN addresses matters. Check whether the time between them counts, and whether one person or two will turn up.
Flat removals near the town centre
A top-floor flat off Wigan Lane is quoted on stairs and carry distance as much as on size. For a flat removal, tell the firm the floor, whether there's a lift, and where the van can wait.
Storage while you wait to move in
Selling in Hindley before your Standish purchase is ready? Many removal companies can load your home into storage and bring it out again when the keys arrive. Ask for the weekly charge and the redelivery on one quote.

Parking
Where can a removal van park in Wigan?
Most of the borough has no permit scheme, but two town centres do. Wigan Council runs controlled parking zones from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday:
- Wigan: W1 Swinley South, W2 Swinley North, W3 Swinley West — streets such as Dicconson Terrace (pictured), Upper Dicconson Street, Swinley Road and parts of Wigan Lane and Mesnes Road.
- Leigh: L1 and L2 — shared-use bays, so a non-permit holder can park for one or two hours, depending on the bay.
Residents in a zone can buy daily visitor permits. A permit for one zone isn't valid in another. We found no published process for suspending a bay for a move, so contact the council well before the date.

Greater Manchester has no charging Clean Air Zone, so any age of removal van comes in free.

Local knowledge
Moving in Wigan: what to know
Removals in Standish, Leigh, Hindley and across WN
- Town centre, Swinley, Ince and Haigh (WN1) — the permit zones sit here.
- Hindley, Aspull, Abram and Platt Bridge (WN2) — east toward Westhoughton.
- Winstanley, Worsley Mesnes and Goose Green (WN3) — the south-west side.
- Ashton-in-Makerfield and Garswood (WN4) — south, with part in St Helens.
- Orrell, Pemberton and Billinge (WN5) — west, again partly St Helens.
- Standish, Shevington and Appley Bridge (WN6) — north, with Wrightington in West Lancashire.
- Leigh, Pennington and Westleigh (WN7) — east of Wigan, with its own post town.
- Skelmersdale, Up Holland and Parbold (WN8) — all West Lancashire.
Council rules follow the address, not the postcode. Golborne and Lowton are Wigan borough but carry WA3 postcodes, shared with removals in Warrington. Skelmersdale was made a new town in 1961 to rehouse families from Liverpool. It sits in West Lancashire, so Wigan Council's rules don't apply there.
Does the canal change the route?
It can. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through town, and the Wigan Flight of 21 locks, finished in 1816, lifts it more than 200 feet in two and a half miles. Roads cross it only at bridges, so the van's route may be longer than the map suggests.
Wigan Pier, the old canal wharf Orwell made famous, gained planning approval in 2019 for a mixed-use scheme including homes. Leigh lost its railway station in 1969; the guided busway now runs to Manchester.

The money side
What Wigan moves actually cost
Postcode is close to irrelevant to a removal quote. Volume, distance and access do almost all the work. Typical UK figures by property size sit in the removal costs guide, and the cost calculator will put a number on your own move in about a minute.

Moving in Wigan: FAQs
Do removal companies in Wigan cover Leigh, Standish and Skelmersdale?
Yes. WN takes in Leigh (WN7), Standish and Shevington (WN6), Ashton-in-Makerfield (WN4) and Skelmersdale (WN8), which is over the line in West Lancashire. Put both postcodes in the form and every quote covers the full journey.
Can a removal van park in the Swinley permit zone?
Swinley has three controlled parking zones, W1 to W3, run by Wigan Council from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Residents there can buy daily visitor permits. We found no published bay suspension process for removals, so ask the council early.
Will an older removal van pay a clean air charge in Wigan?
No. The government accepted an investment-led plan for Greater Manchester in place of a charging zone. Vans of any age drive into Wigan, Leigh or Hindley without a daily fee.
How do I check reviews of Wigan removal companies?
Look each firm up on Google or Trustpilot before you book, and read the recent reviews, not just the score. Ask for proof of goods-in-transit and public liability insurance, and check whether the firm is a BAR member.
How much do house removals cost in Wigan?
It depends on how much you own, the stairs and parking at each end, and the miles between. Moving a Swinley terrace inside a permit zone can take longer than a Standish semi with a drive. Our costs guide shows typical UK prices for each home size.
