Luxembourg is one of the shortest European moves from Britain, but Brexit put a customs step in the middle. Here is how the exemption for personal property works, what to have ready, and the tight deadline for registering with your commune.

Do you pay customs moving to Luxembourg after Brexit?

Not on personal property that qualifies. Luxembourg exempts it from duties and taxes when you move your normal home from outside the EU. You need 12 consecutive months living in a non-EU country — the UK counts — and goods you have had for at least six months before you left.

The exemption is broad: furniture and household effects, clothing, bikes and motorbikes, a private car, a caravan or pleasure boat, household provisions and pets. It stops at anything commercial, at alcohol and tobacco, and at new goods still in their original packaging. Everything must be released within 12 months of settling.

What should you prepare for Luxembourg customs?

A detailed inventory with estimated values, dated and signed, in two copies. Number your boxes and make the list match them — a precise inventory is what keeps the clearance quick. Add proof that you lived outside the EU, such as a UK tenancy and payslips, and proof that you are settling in Luxembourg, such as a lease, deeds or a work contract.

Customs also asks you to sign an undertaking on its form for transferring a residence from a non-EU country. The timing helps: the declaration can be made up to six months before you move, useful when the lorry is booked ahead of your start date.

How quickly must you register with your commune?

Faster than almost anywhere else. EU citizens file a declaration of arrival with their commune within 8 days of moving into the home. Britons are now non-EU nationals, so the deadline is 3 days from arriving in Luxembourg — and for a stay of more than 90 days you need a temporary authorisation to stay before you travel.

Plan the delivery around it. If the furniture lands on a Friday and the commune office is shut until Monday, the clock is already running.

What route does a removal to Luxembourg take?

A short one by European standards. After the Channel crossing the lorry runs through northern France or Belgium and straight into the Grand Duchy, whether you are heading for Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette or a village near the border.

The short distance means a dedicated vehicle is often within reach even for a smaller home, though a part load still saves money if your dates are flexible. Many city apartments have tight lifts, so tell the firm the floor and lift size when you ask for quotes.

Moving from Luxembourg to the UK

Going back to Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief on form ToR01 before the move. The conditions: 12 consecutive months living outside the UK, goods owned for at least six months, and import within 12 months of arriving.

Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles are excluded. If you land before your UK home is ready, storage bridges the gap.

Are household goods moved from the UK to Luxembourg free of tax?

Yes, if you qualify. Luxembourg customs exempts personal property from duties and taxes when you have lived outside the EU for 12 months in a row and have had the goods for at least six months.

Can I declare my belongings before I move?

Yes. Luxembourg lets you make the customs declaration up to six months before your change of residence, which helps when the lorry leaves the UK ahead of you.

What goes on the inventory?

A detailed list of your belongings with estimated values, dated and signed, in two copies. Number the boxes so the list matches the load.

How soon must I register with my commune?

EU citizens declare their arrival within 8 days of moving into the home. Non-EU nationals, which now includes Britons, have 3 days from arriving and need their authorisation to stay sorted before they come.

Can I bring new items still in their boxes duty free?

No. Unused goods in their original packaging, and anything owned for less than six months, fall outside the relief. Alcohol and tobacco are excluded too.
