What Brighton books
What do removal companies in Brighton handle?
Flats in converted townhouses
Many Regency and Victorian houses in central Brighton and Hove are now flats. A top floor can mean several flights, no lift and stairs that narrow as they climb. Ask for flat removals quotes, give the floor number, and say which pieces came up in bits.
House and domestic removals
Out in Patcham, Withdean and Westdene the houses get bigger and many have drives. That's standard house removals work, priced on volume, access and distance. List anything heavy — a piano, a safe, a range cooker — so the price you get is the price you pay.
Man with a van in Brighton
A studio, a student room, a sofa from a Hove flat. An hourly man and van team — one person or two — is the cheaper route for a small move. A smaller van is easier on a tight street, but it still needs somewhere legal to stop. In a permit zone, a suspended bay saves paid time.
Office and commercial removals
Moving an office or a shop? Ask for office removals quotes, and say whether the move has to happen out of hours. Businesses with a Brighton & Hove address pay the lower £19 suspension admin fee too.
Storage between moves
If your rental or completion dates don't line up, many removal companies offer removals and storage. Ask how it's charged — usually by the week and by the space your goods take up.
Moving down from London
Ask for long distance removals quotes with both full postcodes, and arrange parking at both ends. Our London house removals guide covers the borough side.

The local reality
How do you reserve parking for a Brighton removal?
Much of central Brighton and Hove is in controlled parking zones. Without a reserved space the crew hunts for one, and the hunt is billed. Brighton & Hove City Council suspends bays for moving house.
- Notice: seven full working days. Applications received after 2pm count from the next working day. An urgent suspension may be possible for an extra £20.
- Daily charge: £51 per 5.5m bay per day for removals, as of November 2026. A removal lorry can be longer than one bay, so ask the company how many to book.
- Admin fee: £38 per application, or £19 for residents and businesses with a Brighton & Hove address. New residents moving in pay the £19 rate for a removal vehicle.
- Changes: a £32 amendment fee applies to changing the date, place or number of bays 4 days before the start. Cancelling after the signs are up costs £32.
- Where it can't be done: no suspensions on yellow lines, in unrestricted areas or in car parks, and none on bank holidays.
A suspension runs from 6am on the first day to 11.59pm on the last, unless you ask otherwise. Don't move the yellow sign — that makes it invalid. Book it once your date is fixed, then tell the removal company it's in place.

Local knowledge
Moving in Brighton: what to know
Brighton sits on the slope of the Downs. Hanover and the roads above London Road are steep, with cars parked on both kerbs, so the van may stop short of your door. Say so on the form.
Is there a clean air zone in Brighton?
Not for vans. The city's low emission zone covers bus services on Castle Square, North Street and Western Road. Brighton isn't on the government list of charging clean air zones, so no emissions fee belongs on your quote.

Moving in Brighton: FAQs
How do I reserve parking for a removal van in Brighton?
Apply to Brighton & Hove City Council for a parking bay suspension — moving house is a listed reason. Removals cost £51 per 5.5m bay per day, plus a £19 admin fee for residents or new residents moving in (£38 otherwise), as of November 2026. Suspensions can't be put on yellow lines or unrestricted roads.
How much notice does Brighton need for a parking suspension?
Seven full working days. The application has to arrive by 2pm to count that day. An urgent suspension may be possible inside that window for an extra £20. Bays aren't suspended on bank holidays.
Is there a clean air charge for removal vans in Brighton?
No. Brighton & Hove's low emission zone covers bus services on Castle Square, North Street and Western Road. It isn't a charging zone for vans, and Brighton isn't on the government list of clean air zones.
Do removal companies covering Brighton also cover Hove, Southwick and Falmer?
Yes. Hove is BN3 and Falmer BN1, both Brighton & Hove. Southwick is BN42, in Adur District, West Sussex, so the city's suspension rules don't apply there. Give both postcodes and the quote covers the full journey.
Is a man with a van cheaper for a small Brighton move?
Usually, for a studio, a room or a few items. It's priced by the hour, so parking matters — a van circling a permit zone is time you pay for. Reserve a bay or tell the driver exactly where to stop.
Will a removal company carry up five flights with no lift?
Yes, but it changes the crew and the time. A top-floor flat can mean an extra person and a longer day, and large furniture may not turn on the stairs. Measure the tightest landing before moving day.
