What Portsmouth books

What do removal companies in Portsmouth handle?

House removals in Portsmouth

Terraces in Fratton, Stamshaw and Copnor, houses on the mainland in Cosham. For house removals here, the street decides the vehicle. Say if parking outside is tight, so each company can choose between one large lorry and a smaller one doing two runs.

Southsea flat removals

Many Southsea villas are now flats, some reached by an outside staircase. Upper-floor flat removals can need an extra pair of hands and a longer carry. Give the floor and the stair type, and the quote should show it.

Furniture removals and single items

A sofa from a shop on Commercial Road, a bed to a student let near the university, a dresser to Eastney. For one or two pieces, see the man and van Portsmouth page for hourly rates. For a room's worth, put it through the main form.

Removals and storage

Leaving a Southsea let before the new house in Waterlooville is ready? Ask for removals and storage in one quote. Collection, storage weeks and delivery then sit on the same price.

Moves off the island

The A3 heads north to London and the M27 west to Southampton. Moves further afield are priced as long distance removals. Probate and landlord jobs go to house clearance firms instead.

The local reality

How do you reserve parking for a Portsmouth move?

Portsmouth City Council suspends parking for a removal van on a house or office move. It only does this in residents' parking zones, permit holders' bays and pay-and-display bays.

  • Email the request with your name, phone number, the address, the length of road (5 to 30 metres), the start date and the number of days.
  • Give at least 7 working days' notice. The council aims to reply within three working days with the total cost.
  • Standard rate: £1 per metre per day, minimum £38. Short notice, if accepted: £1.50 per metre per day, minimum £57.
  • Change or cancel at least 4 working days before for free and a full refund. Later, a £20 fee may apply.
  • No suspensions on unrestricted roads, yellow lines, or doctor, ambulance, police or taxi bays.

A yellow notice goes up on the nearest post. If a car is parked in the space on the day, the council's Traffic Management Centre can send an enforcement officer. Prices as of November 2026.

Local knowledge

Moving in Portsmouth: what to know

Portsea Island has three road links to the mainland: the M275, the A3 London Road and the A2030 Eastern Road. Tell each company your preferred start time, so they can plan the drive on and off the island.

Portsmouth has a Class B clean air zone. It charges non-compliant buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and lorries, but not vans or cars. Most removals in a van pay nothing. If an older lorry is coming into the zone, ask whether the charge is in the price.

Removals in Southsea, Cosham, Havant and around Portsmouth

  • Old Portsmouth, Landport and Fratton (PO1) — the city centre and the streets around Fratton.
  • Southsea (PO5) and Eastney (PO4) — the seafront side of the island.
  • Stamshaw (PO2), Copnor, Baffins and Hilsea (PO3) — the north of the island.
  • Cosham and Paulsgrove (PO6) — on the mainland, still in the city. Portsmouth City Council covers PO1 to PO5; PO6 is split with Havant.
  • Havant (PO9) and Hayling Island (PO11) — Havant Borough Council.
  • Gosport (PO12) — Gosport Borough Council. There's no road across the harbour mouth, so the van goes round via Fareham (PO14, PO16).

The suspension rules above are Portsmouth City Council's. Outside the city, another council's rules apply, so ask the company to check. For a price range first, try our removal costs calculator.

Good to know

Moving in Portsmouth: FAQs

Does the Portsmouth clean air zone charge removal vans?

No. Portsmouth's zone is Class B. It charges buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and lorries that miss the emissions standard, but not vans or cars. If a company sends an older lorry into the zone, ask whether a charge is on the quote.

How much does a parking suspension cost in Portsmouth?

£1 per metre per day, with a minimum charge of £38, as of November 2026. Ask at least 7 working days ahead. With less notice the council may still agree, but at £1.50 per metre per day and a £57 minimum. You can suspend between 5 and 30 metres of road.

Can I suspend parking outside my house for a removal in Portsmouth?

Yes, if the bay is in a residents' parking zone, a permit holders' bay or a pay-and-display bay. The council names a removal van for a house or office move as an eligible reason. It won't suspend unrestricted roads or yellow lines. Requests go by email.

Can I cancel a Portsmouth parking suspension if my move date changes?

Yes. With at least 4 working days' notice before the start, the council moves the date for free or cancels and refunds you. Inside that, it may charge a £20 amendment or cancellation fee.

Do removal companies covering Portsmouth also cover Hayling Island?

Yes. Hayling is PO11, in Havant Borough, joined to the mainland by one road bridge. Give both postcodes and the quote covers the journey.
