What Newcastle books
What do removal companies in Newcastle handle?
House removals in Newcastle upon Tyne
North of the Town Moor the houses grow — Edwardian terraces in Gosforth, then semis with drives out towards Kenton and Great Park. House removals are best priced from a survey or video walk-round. Mention the loft, the shed and the garage, because that's where quotes usually go wrong.
Tyneside flat moves
The Tyneside flat is the local housing type: one terrace, two flats, two front doors side by side. Upper flats often have a staircase down to the yard at the back. Good flat removals crews ask which way the furniture goes before they quote.
Man with a van in Newcastle
Clearing a Heaton student let, or bringing a dresser back from a Gosforth auction? A man with a van is paid by the hour, and a short-wheelbase van fits a back lane that a Luton can't. Before it crosses the river, ask whether the van meets the clean air standard.
Furniture and piano removals
Moving a few big pieces rather than a whole home? List each one with rough measurements, and say if it has to go up the narrow stair of an upper Tyneside flat. An upright or grand needs a piano removal crew with the right kit, so name it on the form.
Office and commercial moves on Tyneside
Quayside offices, shops on Grainger Street, a unit at Team Valley. For office removals, give the floor, lift size and loading bay at both ends. A city-centre move is inside the clean air zone, so check the vehicle as well as the price.
Clearances
Probate, landlord turnarounds and downsizing all come through house clearance companies. Ask how they'll dispose of what's left, and check for a waste carrier licence.

The local reality
Does the clean air zone affect a Newcastle removal?
It can. Newcastle and Gateshead run a clean air zone over most of the city centre, 24 hours a day. Private cars aren't affected. Older vans and lorries are.
- Vans: £12.50 a day if non-compliant. Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol meets the standard — generally a diesel registered after September 2016, or a petrol after January 2006.
- Lorries: £50 a day if non-compliant. HGVs need Euro VI, which generally means registered after 2014.
- One charge per day, midnight to midnight. A van that enters before midnight and leaves after it pays twice.
- Pay within six days of the journey, through the GOV.UK clean air zone service.
The catch for movers is the river. Routes over the Tyne, Redheugh, Swing and High Level bridges are inside the zone, so a Gateshead-to-Jesmond move can cross it even if neither address is in the centre. Ask each company whether its vehicle complies, then look for a CAZ line on the quote.

Moving in Newcastle: what to know
How do you keep parking free for the removal van in Newcastle?
Newcastle City Council offers two routes, and removals are named in both.
- Dispensation — £30 per vehicle. Lets the van wait on yellow lines or past a time limit. The council lists furniture removal vehicles as a valid use. Apply at least 3 working days ahead and pay in advance. It isn't issued during loading restrictions, or within 50 metres of traffic lights or a crossing.
- Bay reservation — £30 admin plus £20 per space per day. Where bays aren't marked, it's £20 for each 6.6m of kerb. The council gives a house move in a permit parking street as an example. Send the form at least 3 working days ahead.
Parking Services is on 0191 277 2737. These are the council's published fees. Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland run their own parking, so check the other end separately.

Back lanes
Plenty of Victorian terraces here have a back lane behind them. Where it's wide enough, a van can load from the lane instead of double parking out front. Measure it, or send the removal company a photo.

What Newcastle moves actually cost
Removal prices don't really split by city — they follow your volume, distance and access far more than your postcode. Published ranges by property size live in the removal costs guide, and the cost calculator turns your details into an estimate straight away.

Moving in Newcastle: FAQs
Can a removal van park on yellow lines in Newcastle?
Sometimes, with a dispensation from Newcastle City Council. The council names furniture removal vehicles as one of the uses. It costs £30 per vehicle, paid in advance, and you should apply at least 3 working days ahead. It isn't issued where loading restrictions are in force, or within 50 metres of traffic lights or a crossing.
How do I reserve a parking bay for a house move in Newcastle?
Apply online to Newcastle City Council for a reservation, at least 3 working days before the move. On-street, there's a £30 administration charge plus £20 per space per day. The council mentions reserving a bay in a permit parking scheme for a house move. Parking Services is on 0191 277 2737.
Will my removal be charged for the Newcastle clean air zone?
Only if the vehicle doesn't meet the standard. Non-compliant vans pay £12.50 a day and non-compliant lorries £50, 24 hours a day. A van generally complies if it's a diesel registered after September 2016 or a petrol after January 2006. Ask each company, and look for a CAZ line on the quote.
Does moving from Gateshead to Newcastle mean entering the zone?
Usually, yes. Routes over the Tyne, Redheugh, Swing and High Level bridges are inside the clean air zone, so a vehicle crossing on them is in it. A compliant van pays nothing; an older one pays the daily charge.
What is a Tyneside flat, and does it change the removal?
It is a terrace split into an upstairs and a downstairs flat, each with its own front door. The upper flat often has a rear staircase to the yard, so furniture may come out the back. Tell the firm which floor you are on and whether the lane is usable.
Do removal companies covering Newcastle also cover the coast and Northumberland?
Yes. NE takes in Whitley Bay (NE26) and Tynemouth (NE30) on the coast, and runs north and west to Morpeth (NE61), Hexham (NE46) and Alnwick (NE66). Put both postcodes in the form and each quote covers the full journey.
