What do removal companies in Oxford handle?
House removals in East Oxford and Headington
Off the Cowley Road and Iffley Road, many streets are Victorian terraces with cars parked down both sides. For house removals there, the first job is a space for the van and the second is a narrow hall. A semi with a drive in Headington or Marston is a quicker load. Say which you have on the form.
Furniture and book collections in north Oxford
North of the centre, around Summertown and Walton Manor, many houses are large Victorian and Edwardian homes with books, pictures and old furniture. A packing service earns its cost here: small book boxes, blanket-wrapped antiques and a survey that counts every shelf. Moving a single wardrobe or a desk from Jericho to Botley? Ask for that item on its own.
Man with a van in Oxford
A college room cleared at the end of term, a bedsit off the Botley Road, or a sofa going across town — an hourly man and van costs less than a full crew. Because the filters stop cars, not vans, the van can take the direct route through Hythe Bridge Street or St Cross Road.
Student moves and removals with storage
Between terms, rooms need emptying and someone has to hold the contents. A company offering removals and storage can collect, store and deliver back to a new address in OX or further away.
Moves to and from abroad
Academic posts bring people to Oxford from all over the world, and take them away again. Those are international removals, with shipping, customs and insurance planned together.

The local reality
Which Oxford traffic rules affect a removal?
The zero emission zone is the one people ask about. Its pilot covers a handful of central streets — New Road, Bonn Square, Cornmarket, Queen Street and a few more — from 7am to 7pm. Vehicles that aren't zero emission, vans included, pay a daily charge to enter.
If neither address nor the route touches those streets, the zone doesn't apply. A wider zone has been proposed, so check the council's map if you live near the centre.
The traffic filters are friendlier to movers. The trial started on 28 September 2026 and applies to cars only — vans and lorries pass at any time. Hythe Bridge Street, St Cross Road, St Clement's Street and Thames Street are filtered 7am to 7pm every day; Marston Ferry Road and Hollow Way at peak times, Monday to Saturday. Your own car, loaded with boxes, may need a different route.

Suspending a parking bay in Oxford
Oxfordshire County Council handles bay suspensions and wants at least 10 working days' notice. It costs about £45 per 6m space for the first day and £18 for each extra day. A pay-and-display bay costs more: about £60 for the first day and £35 a day after, and the council asks you to contact its parking team first. Fees as of October 2026 — check the council's page before you book, as they change each April.

Local knowledge
Moving in Oxford: what to know
Books change the maths. A study wall of shelves can fill more of a van than the bedroom furniture, and it weighs far more. Count the shelves when you ask for a quote.
At the 2021 Census about 29% of Oxford households lived in flats — 24% purpose-built, the rest in converted houses — and 28% in terraces. A converted flat in an old house often means a narrow shared stair, so mention it when you ask for quotes.

The money side
What Oxford moves actually cost
Nobody prices a move by city. The variables that matter are volume, the distance between addresses, and access at both ends. Typical UK figures by property size sit in the removal costs guide, and the cost calculator estimates your own move without waiting for a callback.
Good to know
Moving in Oxford: FAQs
Do removal vans pay to enter Oxford's zero emission zone?
Only if the van is not zero emission and it drives into the zone. The pilot covers a few central streets — New Road, Bonn Square, Cornmarket, Queen Street and a few more — from 7am to 7pm. Petrol, diesel and hybrid vans pay a daily charge; fully electric ones do not. If either address or the route is near the centre, check the council's map.
Can a removal van drive through Oxford's traffic filters?
Yes. The filter trial that started on 28 September 2026 applies to cars only, so vans and lorries pass at any time. If you are ferrying boxes in your own car on moving day, plan that route separately.
Can I suspend a parking bay for a removal van in Oxford?
Yes. Oxfordshire County Council handles suspensions and wants at least 10 working days' notice. It costs about £45 per 6m space for the first day and £18 for each extra day (October 2026). For a pay-and-display bay, contact the council's parking team before you apply.
How do I move books and antiques out of a north Oxford house?
Ask for packing on the quote. Books are heavy and should go in small boxes; antiques and pictures want proper wrapping and sometimes crates. Show the surveyor every shelf, because books can take up more van space than you expect.
How much do removals cost in Oxford?
Local 2-bed moves generally cost £600–£880, and 3-beds £870–£1,300, based on published data from major UK comparison platforms (2025–26). In Oxford, a large book collection and a parking suspension are the two things most likely to add to a quote.
Do removal companies covering Oxford also cover the rest of Oxfordshire?
Yes. The OX postcodes run from the city out to Kidlington (OX5), Abingdon (OX14), Didcot (OX11), Witney (OX28), Bicester (OX26) and Banbury (OX16). Give both postcodes and each quote covers the whole journey.
