What Reading books
What do removal companies in Reading handle?
House removals in Reading
Newtown, Katesgrove and the streets off the Oxford Road are Victorian terraces, many in the red and grey patterned brick the town is known for. Front doors open straight onto the pavement. For house removals here, tell each company where the van can stand and how far the carry is.
East of the centre the houses get bigger. Villas around Eldon Road can mean more stairs and heavier furniture than the bedroom count suggests, so list both on the form.
Man with a van in Reading
Moving a room near the University of Reading's Whiteknights campus, or a sofa from Woodley to Caversham? A man and van booking is usually charged by the hour, which suits small loads with easy access. A full house with a long carry is better priced as a removal.
Office removals in Reading
Moving a business near the station or out at Green Park? Ask for office removals quotes and say if it has to happen in the evening or at a weekend. If the loading door faces a red route, the van needs a dispensation first.
Moving out of London
Moving from London? The Elizabeth line now runs through to Reading, but the van still has to load at the other end. Parking at the London end needs its own plan. Our London house removals guide covers that side.
Removals and storage
Keys for the new house not ready on the day you leave? Ask for removals and storage as one booking, with collection, storage weeks and redelivery priced separately. Moving further, to the West Country or the North? That is a long distance removal.

Parking the van
Where can a removal van park in Reading?
Reading Borough Council runs red routes along the Purple 17 bus corridor. The first section runs from Kings Road through Cemetery Junction and along Wokingham Road to the Three Tuns.
- Double red lines mean no stopping at any time, including to load or unload.
- On single red lines you can stop only where the signs allow.
- The council can grant a dispensation, but not where a reasonable alternative exists. Red line requests are for exceptional cases, such as moving heavy items, and may need a site visit.
- Allow at least six working days, counting the day the council gets your request. You need the van's registration to apply online.
In a residents' permit zone, each household gets two free digital visitor packs a year, each worth 120 hours. Up to five more cost £26 each, as of November 2026. The council's rules define a visitor as someone not attending in a professional capacity, so check before you use one for the van.
We couldn't find a published Reading process for suspending an ordinary parking bay for a move. Call the council's parking team before you book, and tell each removal company what they said.

Moving to Woodley, Earley or Wokingham? Wokingham Borough Council runs its own scheme: a dispensation or bay suspension costs £9.20 a day or £64.30 a week, as of November 2026, paid after approval.

Local knowledge
When does a Reading move get slow?
The Thames sits between the town and Caversham. Reading Bridge and Caversham Bridge are the two road bridges in town, so give a start time with your date if either address is north of the river.
The August bank holiday is the other one. Reading Festival brings Thursday arrivals and Monday departures onto the roads, and the area around Richfield Avenue closes late at night with parking restrictions in force.
Reading has no clean air zone, so a removal van coming into town pays no daily fee for its emissions.

What Reading moves actually cost
Postcode is close to irrelevant to a removal quote. Volume, distance and access do almost all the work. Typical UK figures by property size sit in the removal costs guide, and the cost calculator estimates your own move without waiting for a callback.

Moving in Reading: FAQs
Can a removal van stop on a Reading red route?
Not without a dispensation. Double red lines mean no stopping at any time, even to load. Reading Borough Council grants red line dispensations only in exceptional cases, such as moving heavy items, and needs at least six working days to process one. Apply online with the van's registration, as of Nov 2026.
Can my removal van use a Reading visitor permit?
Ask the council first. Households in a permit zone get two free digital visitor packs a year, each worth 120 hours, and can buy up to five more at £26 each, as of Nov 2026. The council's rules define a visitor as someone not there in a professional capacity, so a removal van may not count.
Should I avoid moving in Reading over the August bank holiday?
If you can, yes. Reading Festival takes that weekend: Thursday arrivals and Monday departures fill the roads, and the streets around Richfield Avenue close late at night with parking restrictions in force. Any other weekend is easier.
Do removal companies covering Reading also cover Woodley, Earley and Tilehurst?
Yes. Woodley is RG5 and Earley RG6, both mostly in Wokingham borough. Tilehurst spans RG30 and RG31, split between Reading and West Berkshire. Give both full postcodes so each quote covers the right council area and the whole journey.
Is there a clean air zone in Reading?
No. Reading does not appear on the government clean air zone list, so the van pays no daily emissions fee to come into town.
How much does moving from London to Reading cost?
Volume, access at both ends and the hours on the job set the price, more than the mileage. Use our calculator for a range, then compare real quotes for your inventory and both postcodes.
