Do you pay GST on household goods shipped to Singapore?
Not if you qualify for GST relief. It covers foreigners relocating to Singapore, and citizens or permanent residents coming home after living abroad.
- You own the goods and have used them for at least three months.
- They arrive within six months of your first arrival in Singapore.
- You agree not to sell or give them away for three months after they land.
Timing is the trap. You or your mover file an online Declaration of Facts before the shipment arrives. If the goods land first, Singapore Customs rejects the application and GST is due.
Expect to supply your passport, proof of the move (such as your pass or in-principle approval letter) and the bill of lading. Your mover then takes out the relief permit.

What can't you pack for Singapore?
Chewing gum is prohibited, and so are imitation tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and vapes. Leave them out of the boxes and your hand luggage.
Some goods never get GST relief, even on a genuine relocation: alcohol, tobacco, cars, boats and commercial stock. Duty and GST are payable on them, so a wine collection is often cheaper to sell before you go.

Moving to Singapore from the UK: how the move runs
Most household moves go by sea. A full container sails on its own booking; a shared one costs less but waits until it fills. Air freight suits a few boxes you need on day one.
Build the paperwork into the timeline. The Declaration of Facts has to be in before the ship docks, so give your mover your pass details as soon as you have them.
Most homes in Singapore are flats in condominiums or HDB blocks. Ask your building management or town council whether the lift must be booked for moving day, and pass the answer to your mover.
Prices are quoted on different bases, so we won't publish a single figure. Compare surveyed door-to-door quotes, and see our international removal costs page for the routes where prices are verified. If your start date slips, UK storage can hold the shipment.
Visas and employment passes are outside what we cover — the Ministry of Manpower is the place to start.
Can you bring a dog or cat to Singapore?
Yes. The UK is a Schedule I country, so a dog or cat that meets every veterinary condition needs no quarantine on arrival.
Get a dog or cat licence first, then the import licence, which is valid for 90 days. Some breeds are banned, including pit bulls and Akitas, so check the list before you plan anything else.

Moving from Singapore back to the UK
The return leg has its own relief. Transfer of Residence relief lets you bring household goods into the UK without duty or VAT if you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months and owned and used the goods for at least six.
Apply on GOV.UK before the goods arrive. HMRC gives you a reference number, and your removal company quotes it to clear the shipment.
Removals to Singapore: FAQs
Do I pay GST on household goods shipped to Singapore?
Not if you qualify for relief. You must be relocating to Singapore, own the goods and have used them for at least three months. They must arrive within six months of your first arrival, and you agree not to sell them for three months.
When do I apply for GST relief?
Before the goods arrive. You or your mover submit an online Declaration of Facts to Singapore Customs. If the shipment lands first, the application is rejected and GST is payable.
Can I ship wine or spirits in my container?
You can, but alcohol and tobacco never qualify for GST relief. Duty and GST are payable on them, so many people sell or give away their cellar before the move.
Can I take a vape or chewing gum to Singapore?
No. Chewing gum and imitation tobacco products such as e-cigarettes are prohibited in Singapore. Leave them out of your luggage and your shipment.
Will my dog or cat go into quarantine?
Not if it is fully compliant. The UK is a Schedule I country for Singapore, so compliant dogs and cats need no quarantine on arrival. You need a dog or cat licence first, then an import licence.
How much does it cost to move to Singapore?
It depends on volume and whether you take a full container or share one. Published prices use different bases, so we do not quote a single figure. A survey gives a fixed door-to-door price.
