What Canterbury books
What do removal companies in Canterbury handle?
House removals in Canterbury
Most homes sit outside the walls, from Wincheap and Thanington to Hales Place, Sturry and the villages towards Bridge. Standard house removals are priced on access as much as size. Mention steps, a shared path or a street where the van can't stop outside.
Flats and student lets
The University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church both bring students to the city, so many rented rooms change hands at the start and end of the academic year. For flat removals, say whether there's a lift and where the van can stop. Older converted buildings near the centre may have neither.
Man with a van in Canterbury
Moving out of a room near the University of Kent campus, taking a bed and boxes from Tankerton, or a sofa across town? An hourly man and van service usually costs less than a full crew for jobs that small. A smaller van also copes better with the Iron Bar Lane unload. In Folkestone, see man and van Folkestone.
Removals and storage in Canterbury
Selling in Whitstable before the Canterbury purchase is ready? Ask for removals and storage on the same quote. Check whether storage is charged weekly, and whether the second delivery is priced in.
Business and office moves
Shops and offices inside the walls face the same bollard hours as homes, so a move often runs in the early morning or the evening. For office removals, give the exact address and say if the work has to happen outside trading hours.
Moving away from east Kent
Moves towards London head up the A2 and M2. Anything further is quoted as long distance removals, so give both full addresses for an accurate price.

Inside the walls
How does a removal work in Canterbury's pedestrian zone?
The centre of Canterbury is protected by more than 100 security bollards. Vehicles get in through an intercom at one of the automated bollard sites, and the council's control room decides who goes through.
When the council last published the rules, deliveries to homes inside the zone were allowed from 4pm to 10.30am — confirm the current hours with the council before you fix a time. Access between 10.30am and 4pm can be requested online, but only in exceptional circumstances. Otherwise the van stays out, and the crew unloads in Iron Bar Lane and trolleys everything to your door. That adds time, so an early start helps.
Over half of the city wall still stands, with the ring road running outside it. If your home is inside the circuit, say so on the form. Each company can then plan the timing and the van before it quotes.

Council parking
Where can the removal van park in Canterbury?
Canterbury City Council runs on-street parking across the city, Whitstable and Herne Bay. We couldn't find a council process for suspending a bay for a house move. Here's what the council does publish, as of November 2026:
- A tradesperson parking waiver: £20 a day, £66 a week, £200 a month or £640 a year. It's virtual, so it works once approved. Vehicles must keep clear of bus stops. The page is written for tradespeople and doesn't mention removals.
- Visitor vouchers for residents of an eligible permit zone. Each lasts 24 hours from the time you choose, and they can't be used in car parks. The council's page doesn't give a price.
Before the day, check your zone and ask the council which option suits a removal van. Your removal company may also have dealt with it before. There's no clean air zone in Canterbury.

Dover port traffic
When the Port of Dover is busy, Dover TAP holds lorries at lights on the coastbound A20 at Aycliffe. A move into Dover on a holiday weekend needs slack in the timings.
Moving from London
The high-speed service from Canterbury West to St Pancras takes under an hour, which draws commuters as well as students. For a price range before you compare quotes, try our removal costs calculator.

Moving in Canterbury: FAQs
Can a removal van get into Canterbury city centre?
Yes, at set times. Vehicles enter the pedestrianised zone through an intercom at the security bollards, and the council's published delivery hours for homes inside it are 4pm to 10.30am — check they still apply. Between 10.30am and 4pm, vehicles get in only for exceptional reasons. Otherwise the crew unloads in Iron Bar Lane and wheels your things in.
Can I reserve a parking space for the removal van in Canterbury?
We couldn't find a Canterbury City Council process for suspending a bay for a house move. The council does sell a tradesperson waiver, from £20 a day as of November 2026, but its page doesn't mention removals. Residents in a permit zone can buy 24-hour visitor vouchers. Ask the council which one fits a removal van.
Do removal companies covering Canterbury also cover Thanet, Deal and Dover?
Yes. CT runs from Whitstable (CT5) and Herne Bay (CT6) through the Thanet towns to Deal, Dover, Folkestone and Hythe. Most companies covering it work across the whole area. Put both full postcodes on the form so every quote prices the full journey.
Will Port of Dover traffic affect my move?
It can, if the route uses the A20 into Dover. At busy times Kent County Council runs Dover TAP, which holds port-bound lorries at traffic lights on the coastbound A20 at Aycliffe, with a 40mph limit for everyone. On peak holiday weekends, ask the removal company to build in extra time.
Is there a clean air zone in Canterbury?
No. Canterbury is not on the government list of clean air zones in England, so no emissions charge should appear on a Canterbury quote.
How much do removals cost in Canterbury?
Volume, distance and access set the price. A flat inside the bollard zone, where the van may have to unload in Iron Bar Lane, can take longer than a bigger house with a drive in Chartham or Herne. Our removal costs calculator gives a range in about a minute.
