What Medway books

What do removal companies in Medway handle?

House removals in Medway

Central Chatham and Gillingham have long streets of Victorian terraces. Many open straight onto the pavement, and some sit above the road behind steps. Full house removals are priced on volume, access and distance. Tell each company about the steps, the slope and how far the van may have to park.

Flats by the river

St Mary's Island, Chatham Maritime and the Strood riverside have newer flats, many with lifts and allocated parking. For flat removals, book the lift with the managing agent and check the van's height against any car park barrier.

Office removals in Medway

Moving an office or a shop? Ask for office removals quotes and say whether the move must happen out of hours. Medway Council won't suspend parking bays for a move of business premises, so give the exact address and ask each company where the van will load.

Man with a van in Medway

A room, a one-bed flat or a few items between Chatham and Gillingham. An hourly man and van team is usually cheaper than a full crew. Use the same form and say how much you're moving. Moving from Maidstone? See man and van Maidstone.

Moving out of Kent, and storage

The A2 and M2 take Medway moves towards London and the coast. Anything further is quoted as long distance removals. If your completion dates don't line up, ask for removals and storage in the same quote.

The local reality

How do you reserve parking for a removal van in Medway?

If the van can't stop legally outside, Medway Council can suspend parking bays. The rules decide who applies:

  • Only companies or contractors can apply. Residents can't, so ask your removal company to do it.
  • You can't apply if you're moving business premises.
  • It costs £50 per bay, per day, as of November 2026. You aren't charged until it's approved, and a late cancellation can cost extra.
  • Apply at least 10 days before the move, with a copy of at least £5 million public liability cover. The council reviews it within 5 working days.
  • The council makes the signs. The applicant provides barriers and tells the affected properties. A dispensation for the work vehicle comes with it and must be on display.

Access matters too. Streets in Luton, Chatham Hill and much of Gillingham climb steeply from the river, and some terraces sit above the road behind a wall and steps. Mention it on the form, so each quote allows for the carry.

Moving in Medway: what to know

Removals in Chatham, Rochester, Gillingham and Strood

  • Chatham (ME4, ME5) — the town centre, Luton, St Mary's Island and Chatham Maritime are ME4. Walderslade and Lordswood are ME5.
  • Rochester (ME1) — the historic High Street, the castle area and Borstal.
  • Gillingham (ME7, ME8) — the town centre and Hempstead are ME7. Rainham and Twydall are ME8.
  • Strood (ME2) — across Rochester Bridge on the west bank.
  • Hoo Peninsula (ME3) — Hoo, High Halstow, Wainscott and the villages towards Allhallows.

Medway Council covers all of these, so the suspension rules above apply in every town. Maidstone, Kings Hill and the villages to the south have their own page: removal companies in Maidstone.

Crossing the river

Rochester Bridge on the A2 links Strood and Rochester. The Medway Tunnel on the A289 runs from Strood to Chatham Maritime and St Mary's Island.

The Hoo Peninsula is where much of the new housing is planned. Medway's draft Local Plan allows for at least 10,600 homes there. Completion dates on new estates are set by the developer, so keep your booking flexible until you have the date in writing.

Heading for Essex? The Dartford Crossing is still the only route. The Lower Thames Crossing is under construction but isn't due to open until the early 2030s.

Good to know

Moving in Medway: FAQs

Can I suspend a parking bay for my removal in Medway?

Not as a resident. Medway Council only takes bay suspension applications from companies or contractors, so your removal company applies. It costs £50 per bay, per day, as of Nov 2026. Apply at least 10 days ahead, with £5 million public liability cover. The council reviews it within 5 working days.

Can I get a parking bay suspended for an office move in Medway?

No. Medway Council says you can't apply for a bay suspension if you're moving business premises. Give each removal company the exact address so it can plan where the van will load.

Do removal companies covering Medway also cover Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham?

Yes. Medway is the council area for all of them. Chatham is ME4 and ME5, Rochester ME1, Gillingham ME7 and ME8, Strood ME2. Give both postcodes and the quote covers the journey.

Do removal companies in Medway cover the Hoo Peninsula?

Yes. Hoo, High Halstow and the villages out towards Allhallows are ME3, in Medway. Mention it if your road is single-track or has no turning space.

Is there a clean air zone in Medway?

No. Medway is not on the government list of clean air zones, so no emissions charge belongs on the quote. A van collecting inside London's ULEZ is a different matter, so ask which van is coming.

How much does a removal in Medway cost?

It depends on how much you own, how far it is going and how easy the access is. Our removal costs calculator gives a range in about a minute, and surveyed quotes turn that into a fixed price.
